Old Father Time

SOLD
Old Father Time
16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.
Oil on stretched canvas

“Last night we went to our favourite crêpe restaurant, “Le Coin Tranquille.” As usual it was packed with Bretons. Smoke from the fire stings your eyes. It is noisy, filled with voices of all ages enjoying themselves. It is hot; so many people in one small place, open wood fires and sizzling crêpe plated working full blast. It is a tiny bar, deep in the dark black night and it is such a good night out. A few months ago I designed the place mats, which include portraits of the two girls who do all the cooking and their Grandmother who started it. Father was upset; I hadn’t included him on the place mat! So I decided that he would be an appropriate portrait for New Years Eve, Father standing in for Old Father Time."
Happy New Year everyone.

60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 90 euros (Europe).

Twenty-One Letters

Twenty-One Letters
16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.
Oil on stretched canvas

“Twenty-One Letters Written To A Near Relative”, is the title of this little book that I found inside a ruined workhouse. The letters inside are dated 1777.
Two hundred years later I found it under a pile of leaves in the corner of a huge dormitory.
Now thirty years on I still look at it and wonder whose hands have held it.
My son gave me this beautiful leather bound sketchbook for Christmas.
I shall fill it with drawings and little bits of writing, I wonder if anyone will hold it years from now. Like telephone wires across time.”

Greetings

The painting today is my Christmas card, which is a watercolour of my fireplace looking very festive. I want to send many thanks to everyone who has brought paintings, looked at paintings and commented on paintings. Thank you very much for your support and interest.
Have a lovely, happy and relaxing winter festival, whichever yours may be, enjoy family and friends, lights and good food.
It is a busy day today as I have "flung wide" the doors to my studio and invited tout le monde. Hopefully there will be a few people who drop by to look at my work.
You can do so by watching the little film below.
Painting as normal tomorrow.
There are also some new paintings over in The Red Shoe Box, with some more in the working life series.

Tree Shadows

SOLD
Tree Shadows
30cm x 40 cm. 11.8 in x 15.7 in.
Watercolour

“This Breton house has stood here for years, watching the river flow past. Solid and simple it is washed by shadows from the trees.”
Local watchers of these paintings will know that today the sky is not blue and the river is not flowing in a peaceful manner. This was painted today, from a bunch of sketches and photographs done when the weather was fine. It is tempting to do a still life every day that the weather is just too horrible but one of the things that I enjoy so much with this project is the changing seasons. Having said that maybe I should try painting in the rain. Better get a good umbrella.

75 pounds (UK) 148 dollars (USA) 112 euros (Europe).
This includes postage. Please email me if you are considering having this to keep forever, on your wall, to enjoy for a very long time.

SOLD
Barge at Pont Neuf
33cm x 24cm. 13in x 9.4in.
Oil on stretched canvas

“The river is in flood after all the rain. This barge has a mooring at Pont Neuf; it is a beautiful, big, Dutch Barge, which someone has converted into a home. It has been decorated with hundreds of lights, as have the two houses on the bank just beyond. As a result the inky blackness of the night out here by the river is punctured with a celebration of light both in the night air and the dark waters.”

This is for sale.
95 pounds (UK) 186 dollars (USA) and 140 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.Email me if you would like to buy this or any of the other paintings.

Lights at Inzinzac

SOLD
Lights at Inzinzac
34cm x 24cm. 13.4in x 9.4in.
Oil on stretched canvas

“This time of year the sky is inky black and little towns and villages begin to put up their Christmas lights. This is Inzinzac. I sat a while on the riverbank trying to see all the colours. The sky changed from a deep indigo blue to velvet crimson, lights haloed out as they caught the leaves and twigs of the trees and houses became suggestions of green and ochre. The river swirled by, its currents being highlighted by the reflected lights.”

Full Moon At The Boat Cemetery

SOLD
Full Moon At The Boat Cemetery
46cm x 37cm. 18in x 15in.
Oil on stretched canvas

“Recently I have been wandering at night, drawing and collecting information for a series of night paintings. This one is the cemetery of boats on the river Blavet just outside Hennebont. The full moon gave rise to a wonderful pallet of dark blues and purples. A distant field appeared to be a splash of pure cobalt. It is a beautiful place with the skeletons of old ships resting in the shallow water like fallen dinosaurs.”

These are the willows on the banks of the river Blavet. I loved the way the sky became such an intense colour in the reflections.”

Todays Painting

Dear All
What a day, I have compleated and mailed today's painting to everybody on my mailing list.

Rust

SOLD
Rust
16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.
Oil on stretched canvas

“Walking across the fields I found this rusty bell, its used by the hunters for their dogs. The metal all rusted and the old green leather strap sodden and faded. Time drawing on the surfaces. It must have lain hidden in the grass for month’s maybe even years before I picked it up and moved it on. A little, slow journey. It reminded me of a moment when I lived in Israel. I was working on some illustrations for a book and I was given a roman oil lamp to draw and I could hold it. It was a very simple, pottery lamp but as I worked I saw impressed into the clay the thumbprint of the potter who had made it. Leaping across a thousand years or more, a moment in time lands at your feet or in your hands. A story reveals part of itself and, if you are lucky, you are there when this happens.”

Beeswing

Beeswing
16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.
Oil on stretched canvas

“The French for a still life painting is une nature mort, now is that dead nature or natural death? I suppose it could be both. My windowsill in the studio held this little tableau, I was listening to Richard Thompson singing one of my most favourite songs, “Beeswing” and so this seemed the perfect subject for today’s painting. Sad but beautiful.”

They achieve clothes nirvana, a heaven where the most comfortable and much loved clothes go to be used and appreciated.”

Buddha

SOLD
Buddha
16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.
Oil on stretched canvas

“Continuing a meditative theme, this is the Buddha which used to belong to my grandmother. She was a well-travelled lady and I like to imagine that he was one of her finds from a time when travel was exotic and involved large trunks and long journeys on steamers. He reposes in his white marble slumber, a little area of calm and serenity in my studio and every time I look at him I am back with my Grandmother. I enjoy time travel with certain objects, this is one of them.”

“I have a lot going on right now, lots of work, tight deadlines, a couple of commissions, bigger paintings that cry out to be painted, worrying about peoples health, trying to be a good partner (shock, horror! I am even doing the cooking at the moment!) So I wanted to calm down. Have a moment just for me. Painting defiantly provides an oasis of peace and painting something like this even more so. Smooth cool stone, soft edges and subtle shades. I come back to the real world, two hours later, refreshed and ready to face life again.”

Breton Morning

Breton Morning
16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.
Oil on stretched canvas

“In Brittany at this time of year, as the trees rapidly loose their leaves and the pale sun highlights a damp and waiting earth, there is a sense of ancient forces. Old beliefs live within the stones and forests; mossy paths hold powerful secrets and big sky’s watch over this Celtic land. Walking out this morning it is as if everything is for the first time. The ancient magic is here and now. The world is new. Which I suppose it is, every single day, it is just that we don’t always notice it.”

“Little button mushrooms, a study of white, well there is hardly any white here just little subtleties of tone and colour. The vegetable session is finished now. So the winter casserole was a bit of a strange one, no onions and some beans and bacon would have been nice. The call of the fields is too strong, the weather is sharp and frosty and I am off out with my dog and my sketch book to do some studies for next week’s paintings.”

Savoy Cabbage

Oil on stretched canvas

“For me this is the king of cabbages, I don’t care what it tastes like, although it tastes fabulous, I think it is simply stunning to look at. Deep furrows of greeny blue with ruffles of bright greens. If I ever had to have a posh frock, like I had an invitation to the Oscar’s or some such party, then I would base it on a Savoy cabbage. Just imagine how beautiful it would be!”

“A kind of sunflower with edible tubers. They have a fantastic sweet nutty flavour and are beautiful roasted. The colours on these little tubers are lovely rich reds and orangey pinks, yellows and deep dark browns. The French for this vegetable is Trompinambour, a name which reminds me of their side effect after eating too many. Excuse me, I must just leave the room, I feel a trompinambour brewing!”

Reflections

Reflections
12cm x 12 cm. 4.7 in x 4.7 in.
Watercolour

There is a place along the river with a wide majestic curve where the water seems to slow down so that the sheltering trees are reflected perfectly. It is while I am watching this upside down world that I realise this place has captured me many times. Go back to October 4th and you will see the rest of the curve, the only difference is the colours of the trees and the sky now seems to hold a November grey within its clouds.”
