Hyacinth on Spotted Cloth

SOLD
Hyacinth on Spotted Cloth
20cm x 20cm. 8in x 8in.
Oil on stretched canvas
Beautiful pink scented flowers with strong shadows made by early spring sunshine. I am not sure which was most important here, the flower or the shadow.
I have been ill with a bad cold, almost flu, (oh woe is me!) which is why there have been few paintings lately. So I am sorry, there will be more soon.

News Flash

My dearest friend and slave, Mr Webmaster David, has been working very hard, sweating over a hot keyboard, learning the tricks of the trade of web site design.
Now we have the all-new and improved web site, including lots of new features:
A place to buy limited edition prints, big A3 size, printed on lovely watercolour paper.
A sneak preview of the soon to be released book, containing a collection of the daily paintings complete with musings.
A more informative older work section with some interesting pages from travel sketchbooks.
Future projects and all about how to commission work from me.
There are links to various places including Gillian Jones Gallery who is having an opening show in March, including some of my work.
The plan is to make this web site much more flexible, up dating and adding to the pages as we go.Well, I bet you can’t wait to go there. We would very much appreciate your thoughts and reactions to it, any glitches that you might find and comments that you may have.

Light Through Trees 1

SOLD

Light Through Trees 1
15cm x 10cm. 6in x 4in.
Oil on canvas board.
Framed size 22cm x 17cm

Another exploration of light in my favourite place, deep in the forest. I am working towards some watercolours I think. I keep being drawn in by the amount of colour that I can see here. Rich gold’s and oranges where the sunlight touches the winter leaves. Soft blues and purples hidden in the shadows.

South Downs 1

South Downs 1
15cm x 10cm. 6in x 4in.
Oil on canvas board.
Framed size 22cm x 17cm

This rolling landscape with its wide-open skies and softly folded hills is, for me, forever England.
We drove through the South Downs this time last year, on the way to the funeral of a friend. Emotions very raw we listened to Vaughn Williams and watched this achingly beautiful landscape unfold. I wept and drew, loving the hills and dried winter colours.
I want to make bigger paintings of this place but I think that I will have to make a special trip, just to drink it in.
This little study is one of two; its partner appears tomorrow.

Each painting costs:40 pounds (UK) 78 dollars (USA) and 60 euros (Europe). This includes the frame and the postage.

(Ithink that is the record for fast sales!)
Treasure Trove
30cm x 30cm. 12in x 12in.

Deep in the forest, late afternoon sunlight punctures the regiments of trees revealing a secret horde, a wealth of jewel colours in the winter leaves of bracken and brambles.

Blue Cafe

SOLD
Blue Cafe
20cm x 20cm. 8 in x 8in.
Oil on stretched canvas

That title sounds like a Joni Mitchell song. Actually, it was a bit like one, early morning in some strange café, on the way to somewhere coming from somewhere else.

I always listen to music when I am painting and like to choose the music to suit the mood of the painting. Because this moment had reminded me of Joni Mitchell’s music that was exactly what I listened to.

Blue

SOLD

Blue
19cm x 24cm. 7.5 in x 9.4in.
Oil on canvas board

My blue glass bottles sit in a little room in my house where I go to chill out, do a little yoga and stare into candles. In the daytime sunlight shines through the glass making deep purple shadows. I find something incredibly calming about blue. Watch the colours in the glass, listen to a recording of the sea and feel completely restored and centred.

Stone Heart

Stone Heart
27cm x 41cm. 10.6 in x 16.1in.
Oil on stretched canvas

Does a portrait tell a story? I think it should, or perhaps when an artist paints a portrait then there is a story in mind. This is my daughter, with the world in the palm of her hand; there is nothing that she cannot do. Looking back I think that we all go through that time in our lives but all to often it passes before we realise it. I wanted to catch it here. She hasn't got a stone heart by the way, quite the opposite, she is holding one, found on the beach.

This painting is not for sale but I do take commissions for portraits email me if you would like more details about commissioning a painting.

Madrid Windows

Madrid Windows.
30cm x 30cm. 12in x 12in.
Oil on stretched canvas

I am in love with this painting, it makes me feel so happy, the buttery yellows and the sunshine. I saw these windows last summer when I was in Madrid and one of the things that I liked so much was the tiny splash of purple in the window boxes, I am very fond of that combination of purple and yellow. If you want the whole experience of this picture it is necessary to listen to Rodrigo Y Gabriela as that is what I have been playing while painting, oh yes and eat some paella!
This is not for sale through me but it is available through a gallery in America. I shall be doing several for that gallery in the next few days, you can find it here:

As always I appreciate any comments that you may have, blogger seems to have been having problems with comments so give it a test.

Changes

After a weekend of soul searching and a great deal of consideration I have decided to stop producing a painting a day.

I will however continue to produce My New Work.

So, what does this mean? Well, I shall be posting my work as and when I have finished each piece. I want to be able to develop work and to have time to work on larger pieces. This will mean that I may or may not have time to produce the smaller works, each day, which have been my painting a day series. I have, to date, produced more than 220 individual paintings since June 2006.

Comfort Food

Comfort Food
16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.
Oil on stretched canvas

Today I have been struggling, with the cold, with winter, with painting, with everything. This is a solution, comfort food, Golden Syrup on toast, by the fire. I have the fire, I have the tin of Golden Syrup but the only problem is that it is empty; I can’t find the stuff in France. I refuse to go to one of those shops set up for “ex-pats”; I don’t think I am an “ex-pat”. I am just me, a European person, living in a place a few miles from where I was born, missing Golden Syrup.

60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe).

This includes the postage.

Chapel Light

SOLD
Chapel Light
18cm x 14cm. 7.1in x 5.5in.
Oil on stretched canvas

Walking through the cathedral of the forest I chanced upon a little chapel, St Anne des Bois, the door was open so I went inside. Three candles were burning, the winter sunlight poured through the windows making a kaleidoscope of soft colour on the walls. It was so quiet and calm that I sat drawing for a while. It seems to me that it really doesn’t matter what religion you choose to follow, places like this fill you up and smooth you down.

Horse

SOLD
Horse
16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.
Oil on stretched canvas

There is something amazing about horses. I don’t ride, wasn’t a horse obsessed little girl, never had dreams of having a pony but I am in awe of these animals. Their heads are so huge with such beautiful eyes that seem capable of looking right into your heart. The smell of a horse is the kind of scent that wanders down the centuries, a meandering link with our past. I hope we are nice enough to horses, I think they deserve our respect.
