Potato Pan

SOLD
Potato Pan (work 5)
Slightly colder weather and bright autumn sunshine makes the roast chicken stall very appealing. The smell of roasting meat carries far on the morning air and huge pans full of hot potatoes billow steam into the sunlight.
I am taking a sneaky break from a lot of illustration work that has taken over in the last week or so, I missed painting too much so have spent Sunday afternoon in the very ladylike occupation of watercolours! Now I am off outside for a jolly fine garden bonfire, Sunday, lovely Sunday.
There is an exhibition of some of my paintings going up in the CMB bank in Hennebont for the whole of October, so if you are down that way go and have a look. If you are interested there is more about that over on Muddy Red Shoes.

Chutney and Marmalade

SOLD
Chutney and Marmalade (buildings 8)
My friends kitchen again. I am drawn to the warmth and humanity of this place. The light comes into the room elevating the mundane to the realms of glorious. This day she had been making chutney from the glut of apples and marmalade, which sat on the table in jars like so many jewels. This is autumn, a table loaded with good things being “put up” for the winter, bright splashes of gold and red amongst the warm browns. I know they all think I am a bit nuts when I go on and on about their kitchen but I really love it as a subject for painting.

Low Tide

Low Tide (seascapes 6)

Rocks at Low tide, miles of warm shallow water filled with hundreds of rippling colours. Life on the rocks waits patiently for the water to return, seaweed rising like mermaids hair with each kiss of the small waves. It is a warm day with the sky busy with wisps of cloud.

Skylines.

Skylines. (landscapes 5)

I am really fed up today. I put a painting in for a juried exhibition in London and it didn’t get in. These things happen so I have cheered myself up by painting! Skylines are traversing the heavens, the sun is warm and the first scents of autumn are in the air. There really is nothing wrong with my world, so what if a bunch of celebrities didn’t choose my painting, I still recon it was one of my best (it was that Sunday morning kitchen one). Anyway I am busy finishing a few portraits ready for an exhibition in Hennebont, go and have a look on Muddy Red Shoes to see them. I am back to painting now, feeling un loved, like Van Gogh!
Ha!

Sparkling Day. (seascapes 5)

Vapour trails write upon a deep blue sky while the sea, a slash of sparkling diamonds, acts as a shimmering backdrop to an afternoon of rock pool exploration where the low tide has revealed little worlds full of strange wonders.

Distant Boats Off the Belle Isle.

SOLD
Distant Boats Off the Belle Isle. (seascapes 4)

It is such a beautiful day, the beach is empty, the kids are all back at school now and summer has put in a late appearance. The sky towers above, perfect blue going on forever. It is on days such as these that the worries and woes of the world are lost in the enormous beauty of that blue space. We are but grains of sand, very happy, very relaxed grains of sand…smile into the blue and listen to the waves and wish that we can kiss it all better because it is surely worth it.

Autumn Garden, Sunday Afternoon.

SOLD
Autumn Garden, Sunday Afternoon. (Landscapes 6)

It is a beautiful, early autumn day. Warm breezes move the seed heads and grasses that are beginning to ripen. Sunday afternoon brings a delicious relaxed laziness. A time to reflect and daydream in the balmy sunshine. My Grandpa was a very good gardener and used to maintain the practice of leaving the seed heads on his plants for the birds to eat through the winter. Days like these always make me think of him as I let my garden gently go towards the winter.

Uilleann Piper.

Uilleann Piper.
Oil on Canvas
64cm x 81cm 25in x 32in.

I have just finished off my painting of Dicky Deegan the Uillean Piper. I wanted to show the darkly haunting quality of the sound as well as some of the frenetic complexity of it too. It is a beautiful instrument with what seems to me, many voices, and sometimes several all at once. It is a strange thing when making portraits; I am never sure what the end result should be. Most of the time it seems to my impressions of a person rather than the traditionally held belief that it is the sitter’s personality. I think my way makes sense; after all, we all have our own impressions of people usually governed by our own life experiences. With this portrait, though I wanted to talk about the music as well as the person, as with this musician, he really lives his music.

West Door

West Door (buildings 7)
The west door of Hennbont church is a beautiful construction of impossible stonework. Worn over time by weather and history the incredible artistry of ancient stonemasons watches over the town. Sitting on narrow stone benches I look up, as I would deep in the forest at the arching trees, and wonder at the vision and confidence of the people who long ago decided that something this ambitious was plausible to build.

I have shown the whole page here (30 x 40 cm or 12 x 16 in) as I quite like the loose edges.I am also beginning a new portrait and will be “blogging” its progress over on Muddy Red Shoes.

Chocolate Mousse With a Hint of Chilli

Chocolate Mousse With a Hint of Chilli
43cm x 63cm 17in x 25in
Watercolour.

Second pudding painting, chocolate mousse with a little hit, a slightly dark side, mysterious and exotic. Mexico comes to mind with this pudding.

Vegetable Plots.

Vegetable Plots. (Landscapes 5)

Simple and straightforward, vegetable plots behind some cottages in the village of St Bartelamy. There is nothing fancy about these little plots of land; they exist simply to provide food. They are tended every day by old men and women, there is not a weed in sight, and a well-trodden path leads up to the boules pitch. This is a life, not much talked about but well lived and hardly changing. To me this path running up to the backs of the cottages illustrated so well that timeless feeling that villages have, especially when you go round the back way, off the road and along the snickets.
