Still Afternoon.

Still Afternoon. (landscapes 9)
An autumn afternoon, very still, not a murmur of wind, the sky is an impassive white. The river meanders imperceptibly past carrying leaves, like little boats caught between the two worlds. The one that I inhabit full of the rich autumn smells of earth, leaf and decay and the mysterious other world reflected almost perfectly in the slow silent water.

Contrary or What

Ah phew...feel much better now, having wasted hours of my life trying to fathom eBloomin bay I have decided that it is not for me. Cant do it, dont like it so its back to what I am used to...no more eBay. Honest, from now on its just here.
Pricing paintings is difficult, I try to be fair and honest with my time etc so that is it, they are the price I put on them and I prefer it that way, you buy them if you like them and we are all happy. If you just like to look, fine...enjoy.

Autumn Tree 1

Autumn Tree 1
Today has been one of those autumn days when the colours are unbelievable. Like the world is lit from within, so many glorious colours that my head feels about to explode, I am wandering around grinning and gasping, like a spoilt child in a sweet shop and I am painting trees, here is the first one, there are more to come. I envision a collection of same size paintings going through the seasons, running round a room like a shout of joy.

Tunnel

SOLD

Tunnel (buildings 12)
Well, I don’t like this painting, I am posting it up to show that it doesn't always work. We went on a walk yesterday, along the river (see Muddy Red Sketch Book for sketches) and up to the old railway line. Railways are strange places; I love them for their promise of travel. A rail trip is my favourite way to voyage across the world, I would love one day to “do” every famous rail journey that there is. But the other thing that they hold for me is a sense of foreboding. Maybe that is my Englishness coming out, all those ghost stories woven around trains and tunnels and tracks. Anyway I don’t like this painting and perhaps that’s why.
Sunday trivia question, or alternative title…”Get off the line Bobby” Do you know where that comes from? All answers in a sealed envelope please!

Wolf Mountain.

Wolf Mountain. (landscapes 8)

Up on Wolf Mountain, the sky goes on forever. The landscape unfolds, expansive, like an open palm. I feel as if I have been presented with a land that has changed only slightly over millennia. Ochre grass mixes with purple heathers and bright yellow specks of gorse flowers, the colours are bright and clean as if the wind has blown every speck of dust and pollution far away and here we are, on top of the world.

Grey with Red Beads

Grey with Red Beads
24cm x 19cm 9.5in x 7.5in
Watercolour.

My blogging friend Paris Breakfasts made me think about grey yesterday, so I tried a painting in greys, it is an interesting colour full of nuances and subtleness and with a tiny splash of red, lovely. I thought you might like to see the mess on the paper around the painting as well, so here it is uncropped, see the difference cropping makes.

The hotels and closed up holiday homes become silhouettes against the bright afternoon sun of autumn while a cold wind hurries past carrying the seaweed and iodine scent of the ocean.

Summers End

Summers End (buildings 11)
We went down to the Cote Sauvage, bright sunshine and a cloudless sky. Summer has finished and all the summer lets are boarded up. The beaches are bright and empty, cafes closed for the winter. Houses like this one stand still, sand on their steps and forgotten collections of seashells huddled in quiet corners. Tamarisk bushes and cedar trees seem to wait for the echoes of children’s voices to be scattered by the cold winter winds.

Bar

Bar (buildings 10)
I am an outsider, a foreigner here, I always will be and it is something that I relish. Being an outsider enables me to see things that I know, if I had grown up here, would probably pass me by unnoticed. Also this outsider ship makes me see things that, to my eyes anyway, are essentially French. Now France is a very beautiful country, full to bursting with wonderful sights and places but sometimes I am attracted by the mundane or even ugly. Like this Bar. I think it looks beautiful and French and well…I love it, so I thought I would celebrate that. Here it is!

Kissing Houses

Kissing Houses (buildings 9)
Vannes is full of beautiful half-timbered medieval houses that lean towards each other almost kissing at roof level.
I like the complex patterns the painted timbers make and the strange topple down feeling of the whole town, as if someone once upon a time made the place out of a collection of little sticks and cards leaning them every which way to help them stand up.

Washed Silk and Chinese Bowls

SOLD

Washed Silk and Chinese Bowls
19cm x 21cm 7.5in x 8.3in
Watercolour.

When painting with watercolour something that I like to do is wash off the paint, doing that leaves the paper stained and makes it possible to build up rich and deep colours with a patina all of their own. This washed silk scarf lent its self to this technique as it has the most beautiful range of blues and purples that I wanted to use to show off my Chinese jugs and bowls. Apparently, Turner used to wash off his watercolours so I am only following in the footsteps of the masters, the best way to learn I think.
50 pounds (UK) 100 dollars (USA) and 75euros (Europe). This includes the postage.

Four Bottles

Painting with watercolour is like a meditation. A peaceful time when there is nothing but shape and colour in your mind. These four bottles were crying out to be painted, looking peaceful and serene with the morning light filtering through their old glass.

Airport Cafe

Airport Cafe (cafes 3)
I love airport cafes. It might be the fact that people are waiting, some call it killing time but I think of it as embroidering time. When you are forced to take a little time out from the everyday routine, waiting for someone or something, or in the middle of a journey, then you have time for a bit of life embroidery… That is time for reflection, time to doodle with your thoughts, read a book, linger over a coffee. Perhaps it is because there are so many emotions in the atmosphere, so many greetings and farewells that these places hold the sadness and joy like a perfume on the air.

I am sorry that I have not been painting much lately, normal service will be resumed soon I hope and very shortly I may be transferring sales to eBay.
