On The Road Again

I have a habit of painting on long car journeys, fortunately I am not the one who actually drives the car, I can drive but I think, given my habit of being "thrilled" by the light on some fields of "blown away" by some winter trees, HBB feels slightly safer when he is driving. So I get to paint...here are two that I did while driving through the landscape that is Oxfordshire. Click on the image to get a bigger view.

Clipped Hedges

My mothers garden is a very exuberant space of controlled abandon, rampant in the summer with flowers and scents and textural in the winter with frozen shapes. Next door is a contrast to that, clipped yew hedges make somber and solid shapes in the winter landscape. I prefer my Mums style of garden but I do like the strong shapes of the clipped hedges next door.

Gloucestershire Dawn

The village church in Oakridge Lynch, dawn on a crisp December morning, the sun was just at the point of placing fire in any window that he could and pollarded trees stood like sentinals against the sky.

The Mall and A Tree

More London sketches, beautiful plane trees break the sky with their winter bony fingers and the Mall stretches out a perfect display of perspective. Again, if you want to see these sketches in more detail please click on the image and it will get much bigger.

Early Morning Over the Thames

This was painted in the bighting cold of an early morning on the footbridge beside Hungerford Bridge. I wanted to see the sun rise over the River Thames hear Big Ben strike the hour and see how the London Eye has changed the skyline. I also wanted to play at being Monet or Turner, not exactly the same view but close enough and this will be worked up into a painting when I get home. London Sketch Book

A few sketches from my trip to London. This one is very early in on a Sunday morning, the sun is just coming into the sky and beginning to touch the buildings. The streets are empty of cars and a solitary phone box is still illuminated. I love cities at unusual times, in the quiet you can imagine that you are the only one left, the buildings become cliffs making slices of sky appear in jagged shapes between them.
