Spring Lambs and Fluffy Clouds

Looking out towards Mounts Bay on a fine spring morning. Sheep softly grazing while the clouds skim the landscape with shadows, making the fields dance in different greens.

Cloud shadows skid across the bright spring fields. The new lambs wavering voices carry on the fresh breeze and the sea changes colour by the moment.
This feels like the top of the world, Cornwall is at my feet bright and clear, like a green jewel, shimmering in the morning light.

Early morning opens the town, pulling roofs and windows out of the mist, like a silent magician. Still and quiet gardens gradually wake, showing the textures and patterns of the sub-tropical plants. Monkey Puzzle nestles against English Oak, Passion Flower and Kiwi entwines with Honeysuckle.

This painting is of Falmouth, the town where I went to Art College, many years ago. Having moved back to the area I am enjoying easy access to a place that I love.
It also holds the gallery that is going to take my work. Beside The Wave is down in the heart of the town and has some very fine artists on its books. I am excited to be able to contribute some of my work to their walls…I hope I can live up to their growing reputation.

I went in the other day to see the present exhibition and was very impressed, beautiful paintings of Venice, with a sense of history and crumbling buildings, a real feeling of what I imagine Venice to be like. Wonderful stuff.

Cornish lanes are like topless tunnels; high hedges each side with a band of sky above. Gorse, bracken and wild honeysuckle punctuate the edges of the sky. Every now and then a gateway reveals incredible views, like secret flashes, breathtaking views of fields and river creeks appear. Soft edges of woodland folding down to the riverbanks their winter twiggy fingers about to burst with the bright cloak of spring. The low tides reveal the channels and marks on the estuary mud like the hieroglyphics of a strange language.

Watching the rain riding in before the evening, blurring the edges of fields and hedges, borne on a brisk south westerly. There is a strong storm coming.

This is a little study of hedges and light in Bristol. My sketchbook is my constant companion and fills every pause or space in my life, while I wait, or travel, or hang around, I doodle...this arrangement of hedges attracted me with their ragged bands of light.
