Little Egret

Little Egret
Oil on Canvas
40 x 40cm or 16 x 16 in

The tide is just on the turn, a little Egret stands motionless.  Oystercatchers and Kittiwakes cries echo down the creek, the only sounds to break the silence.  The estuary mud lies waiting for the water to return, there is an air of anticipation.

Black Prince and Many Moons

Black Prince and Many Moons
Watercolour
24 x 32 cm or 9 x 12 in.

A friend of mine has been growing these beautiful tomatoes and I thought that a watercolour still life of them would do just nicely for tomato Tuesday over on the Daily Paintworks group, I will pop over there later to see if anyone else has "done a tomato". Getting the black of the black prince was lovely, it is a deep red/green, glorious colour.

This is for sale for £100 or $200 post and packing included. Please email me if you are interested.

Ebb and Flow

Ebb and Flow
Oil on Canvas board.
10 x 8 in or 25.4 x 20.3 cm.

It is the quiet time between the tides.  The river meanders her way towards the ocean like a ribbon of mirror.  The mud flats of the estuary offer up treasure, the smells of the sea, iodine and seaweed and soft reflections of the trees as if in dull pewter.

This is for sale for £100 or $200, post and packaging included.  Please email me if you are interested.

Tidal Reaches

SOLD
Tidal Reaches
Oil on Canvass board
10 x 8 in or 25.4 x 20.3 cm

It feels as if autumn is fast approaching, the woods dip down to the mud flats on the tidal reaches of Gillan Creek, their leaves just beginning to show a hint of yellowing.  It is quiet and egrets make tiny specks of white in this still, slow time of day.

The Footpath

The Footpath
Oil on canvas board
10 x 8 in or 25,4 x 20.7cm

I am becoming obsessed with this footpath.  I love its secret way, the feeling of something faery, ancient magic dwelling on this very old route.  We have had a bad summer weather wise, leaves are strewn about after a storm and water glistens on the trees, throwing back the light like a petulant sprite.

This is for sale for £100 or $200, post and packing included, please email me if you are interested.

To The Beach

SOLD
To The Beach
Oil on canvas board
10 x 8 in or 25,4 x 20.3 cm.

I have just finished the oil version of the watercolour sketch from last Friday.
I love doing this, working up an oil painting from watercolour sketches, Colours become intensified, catching the sparkle of sun through leaves becomes an effort of memory and imagination.  There is always a point when it all looks hopeless and then, once you push on, through the wall, it begins to really sing and you know that you are flying, "cooking on gas"
That's how I feel about this little painting, it is singing the song of a hot day, walking down to the beach, satchel of sandwiches at the ready, dog by your side.  Nothing finer!

Road to the Sea

Road to the Sea
Watercolour
Sketchbook

Deep leafy shadows, cool and green, out into the sunlight and down to the sea.
This is the sketch in the sketchbook...now I am working on an oil of the same subject.  Which, hopefully I will post up in the next few days.

My broken computer is back along with all my missing data so I am hopeful that my mailing list will be up and running again.  I am having big thinks about: subject matter, why I paint, pricing work, working practise, handling paint, selling online as well as in a gallery and so it goes on.  It is all very confusing sometimes...but it needs thinking about... or does it?

Corner of a Room

Corner of a Room
watercolour
sketchbook.

I have a friend, who has a home that is filled with glorious things.  Paintings adorn the walls, sculptures rest nonchalantly on antique furniture, the functional is beautiful, the comfortable is crafted.  In this home there is an extraordinary collection of art, a very eclectic collection, abstract resides happily with figurative and as much credit is awarded to paintings by the children as to work by well known artists.  This is a little sketch of a small corner.  Warm and glowing.  A lovely place.

Falmouth Bay

SOLD
Falmouth Bay
Oil on canvas board
10 x 8 in or 25.4 x 20.3 cm.

Morning light creeps across a still sea, the land rises dew covered and quiet.  A bird begins to sing and far away a new calf cries for his mother.

Early Light

SOLD
Early Light.
Oil on Canvas board.
7 x 5 in. or 17.8 x 12.7 cm.

Another study of the creeping tide down at St Anthony in the early light.  I did a watercolour the other day.  I find it interesting to see the same subject portrayed in different medium.  I love the way watercolour works, sometimes the paint seems to do most of the work for you. Watercolours are of dreams, like another world whilst oils, on the other hand, have an intensity and solidarity that sits in a little frame and becomes a slice of passionate life.

After The Rain

SOLD
After The Rain
Oil on canvas board
10 x 8 in. or 25.4 x 20.3 cm

It has been a summer full of rain showers, walking down to the sea the rain had left everything bright in the just-light of an early morning. Leaves and grass washed clean, slate shining on the roof of an old barn. Transforming the dusty summer lanes into dripping treasure trails.
