Dennis Head to The Gew

Dennis Head to The Gew
Oil on gessoed board
15cm x 60cm (6" x 24")

Another perfect day, the sea is like green and blue silk gently woven together, moving smoothly and now and again sprinkled with the sparkilyest diamonds. Dennis Head seems to make a last grab for the silken water with granite fingers and a grass and gorse glove.
This is a long one and to have a good look try clicking on the image.

Cherry Blossom

Cherry Blossom
Oil on gessoed card invitation
18cm x 12cm (7" x 4.5")
Every year the cherry blossom transforms the most mundane of streets into a boudoir of frothy pinks. Petals drift on the wind like perfumed snow and I feel as if I am living in a Japanese art-house film! I meander with my head in the clouds muttering "the colours, the colours" like Marlon Brando in a more positive frame of mind (Apocalypse Now)!
Well, that was all a bit filmick!
This is the second, painting for auction.

Spring Wardrobe

Spring Wardrobe
Oil on gessoed card invitation
18cm x 12cm (7" x 4.5")

In the woods beside the sea all of the new leaves are unfurling, lime greens and fresh young burgundies jostle for space with the blue and pale yellow. There is an excited rustling in the air and the scent of bluebells, wild garlic and primrose is intoxicating.
Every year I want to bring these colours home so I start painting the house in fresh whites, blues and bright greens and filling jam jars with bunches of wild flowers.

This is a painting on the back of an invitation for a very posh charity ball, black tie and carriages to take the revellers home. The painted invitations are framed and auctioned off, in aid of Cancer Research and Multiple Sclerosis. I was asked to paint a couple, which I took as a lovely compliment. Second one is here tomorrow.
I hope they get bidded for!

Nare Point, the sketch

Nare Point.
Large moleskine sketchbook
Watercolour

Thought it might be interesting to show the sketchbook painting that contributed to the painting below. I am always fascinated by the different results when using either watercolour or oil, totally different mood sometimes.

Looking South, Cows, Nare Point

Looking South, Cows, Nare Point.
Oil on gesso board
15 cm x 30 cm or 6 inches x 12 inches
Passing the last arms of the land,
We cut the engine and sit a while
Enveloped in the softly slapping silence,
The lavender embrace of a late afternoon sea.

5291
Big Moleskine Sketchbook
Watercolour and Pen

An easterly is blowing up now so no going out on the boat for a while. This was a few days ago and I couldn't resist the blue with the green... whoever said blue with green should never be seen was nuts. They are beautiful together. The woods on the banks of the Helford are full of bluebells right now. Glorious.

Low Tide, After Rain

Low Tide, After Rain.
Oil on gesso board
15 cm x 21 cm or 6 inches x 8 inches

It had rained in the night leaving pools of water in the boats. By the time I was down by the quay the sun was shining, everything was drying. The air was laced with the smells of wet ropes and seaweed and tidal mud. Small reflections shone in the boat, tiny windows into another world and there were diamonds in the mud. A rich day.

Canvas and Paint

Canvas and Paint
Oil on gesso board
30 cm x 15 cm or 6inches x 12 inches
The boats are all laid up down at St Anthony, wrapped in canvas, paint showing the hand prints of last summer. Gradually fresh paint is applied, as weather permits, keels are being scrubbed and scraped, summer is coming, I can see it in the light, smell it on the air.
Over the next few days I will be explaining my painting process of this painting over on Watermarks and on Muddy Footprints. So if you want to see how I work my way towards this then dont forget to tune in to find out.

Falmouth and Rosemullion Head

Falmouth and Rosemullion Head
Large Moleskine Sketchbook
21cm x 60cm or 8 inches x 24 inches
Watercolour
Falmouth in the distance is blurred by mist, past Pendennis point the Roseland is a smudge of palest blue. Colours play tricks in the water which changes from playful, choppy, tiny waves to a seductive silky surface. We "ready about" and head up the Helford river to Frenchmans creek... but that's another picture!
