This is the large painting for April, it had to be the Good Friday cockling, all the little specks of bright colour out across the shore line. April has been a glorious sunny month, hazy days making the distant horizon a balmy blur or soft blue green.

I am not much of a royalist but I do like a good old British "do" so we are having our street party and will be celebrating, possibly in the rain, cant get more British than that! So happy wedding day, this was the river this morning at about 8am.

Up bright and early, beautiful still day beginning down on the river. The wood pigeons and Otty's cockerel are shouting out the start of the day. Lovely strips of muted colour looking down the river. All this good weather has made everything wonderfully hazy. I like haze as much as I like fog and mist I think.

After a lovely family bar-b-que for young Fins birthday I went painting. Its quiet and I fancy that I can see the silent shapes of grey mullet swimming underneath the pontoon in the greeny light. Sometimes the night has its own luminescence.

This was painted as the tide was dropping and there was still some sun. The clouds came over and with them a drop of much needed rain but it didn't dampen the tradition of "trigging" on Good Friday. In fact in the greyer light it was very atmospheric and I am thinking that the big one for this month will have to be the cocklers.

This is Big Dave coming back up the river in our little inflatable. What a stunning evening, beautiful light and high tide. No one about, perfect for a little mozy about in the little boat. Afterwards we spent an evening around an outdoor fire, a few glasses of wine, in a friends garden with this view...

This is late by one day and a few hours, yesterday evening as the dinghies were all flying in. They looked so good against the trees that I had to be quick and try to capture them whizzing past. It has been a busy weekend and a very good one, visits from old friends, time out on the water and great weather. I totally love where I live!

Oil on board, 15 x 20cm
Early this morning, about 7.30 am. Lovely and still. As there were no people around I went out to the end of the pontoon to the original place just to "notice" the greening up of the trees. Looking back to January it is nice to see how much things have changed, the colours are so different.
Here are a couple of sketches as this is now my sketchbook blog as well:

Early this morning, big sausage clouds and everything strangely clear, with slithers of glassy water.
Yesterday I was in such a kerfuffle that I went out to paint and forgot my painting box, so I had paints but no canvas or brushes! Here is a photograph of the really lovely sky that I wasn't able to paint!

Four new paintings, all beautifully framed and on exhibition at Beside the Wave Gallery in the Spring Show, you can see all the paintings in the Spring show on line at the gallery web site. Go and browse, there are some lovely paintings.
A little turn to the right and this is what is there. I have new brushes and therefor some chance of getting some lines in! Anyway, I wanted a different view and this is it. Beautiful day at last, blustery and blue after a misty start.

Very early, blackthorn almost luminous. It had to be gouache, I have run out of oil paint and my brushes are worn to frayed twigs, I have an order for more but it hasn't arrived yet! Blooming lovely days at the moment, Spring has arrived and she is most glorious.

Stunning day, far too bright actually, I am not complaining but I am going to need a hat! It is warm and sunny and so fantastic that I feel like laughing. I tried really hard to keep my mind on painting but it wandered, people are on their boats and on the pontoon, talking to me, I need to go early in the morning, or hide! I also need new brushes, more boards and some more paint, oh yes, and a hat! Time to go shopping.

An early start with a beautiful sky that got me leaping out of bed and rushing out with my paints. Very silky water and that deep calm of early morning before people start buzzing about. Coco, the art hound, sniffs about quietly on the fore shore. I am so glad that she is a quiet dog, any noise other than the dawn chorus would have been wrong. Back home for coffee with Big Dave and Dangerous before they leave for work.

A little bit or watercolour this morning, from a different vantage point. Then a lovely walk back home to roast dinner. One of my boys came round with rabbits for my pot, daffodils for my table and wine for my glass and my daughter brought plants for my garden. What a lucky Mother am I!

Just spent the whole day painting. With quite a lot of illustration work on at the moment it is a real treat just to devote a day to painting. It is making me even more excited about the thought of two weeks in Provence to paint and nothing else! I suspect I shall be a very boring person to be around.
This is the same creek that I painted a couple of weeks ago. This time the tide is high and the trees are blushing a little green. I think it is finished, I shall have another look at it tomorrow and maybe tweak a bit here and there.
9 am, calm day, soft wind full of scents of wild garlic and primrose and violets. The woods shimmer with blackthorn blossom and new leaves. It is the time of change, every day something else has sprung into life. The turn of a season is always exciting.

Its official, the green is there, just a whiff, just a delicate smudge of green on the lacy tracery of branches but enough to gladden even the darkest heart. Having a tussle with some work and computers and ran away to paint, what a blessing it is, completely restored, nice cup of tea and back to the knotty problem with a calm mind!
